Nova

The Nova are one of the three major races of Grandis, alongside the Flora and the Anima.

History[]

Ancient Nova[]

The ancestors of the Nova were pure dragons. During this time, four sacred relics were created, with one of the relics containing the spirit of an ancient Nova warrior named Eskalade Lorang. These ancient Nova also developed powerful weapons of destruction, such as the Blue Dragon Cannon. Over the ages, the ancient dragons evolved into the modern-day humanoid Nova, with their tails, wings, and horns being the sole vestigial remnants of their original dragon features.

Despite the Nova being classified as a separate race from the Anima, there have been two known instances of Anima with dragon features - Ara the Azure Dragon and the unknown dragon Anima elder. Ara possesses dragon horns in the Eastern style of real-world dragons, and has no wings or a tail, which appears to be the main difference between Nova and dragon Anima.

The Black Nova[]

In the era of the Ancient Gods, a group of Nova cultists called the Black Nova became followers of an Ancient God known as Satiras the Devil Dragon. Through Satiras, they gained the power of Malice, with which they conquered the entire realm of Grandis. After the fall of the Ancient Gods, however, the Black Nova lost their connection to Malice and those whom they had conquered - including the rest of the Nova - began hunting them down in retaliation, resulting in their near extinction. What remained of the cultists began the practice of cutting off their horns, wings, and tails in order to prevent themselves from being identified as Black Nova.

Rise of Darmoor[]

After the fall of the Black Nova, the Nova people who had once been subjugated by the cultists maintained diminished, though respectable, influence on a moon of Grandis with an unknown name. There, they built the capital city of Heliseum and the sanctuary city of Pantheon. The Nova were ruled by the royal family and protected by Kaiser, the legendary Guardian of the Nova who reincarnated across the ages.

Even after the chaos of the Ancient Gods was eradicated, Grandis remained embroiled in constant warfare, resulting in the Nova fighting in many battles with the other races of Grandis. In one such battle, the Kaiser of that time and his close friend, Magnus, led the Nova army against an unknown force that appeared to be the Cloud Guardians of the Fox God.[1] During the battle, Magnus seemingly fled the battle and left Kaiser to face the enemy alone. Eventually, Magnus was exiled by the Nova for unknown reasons.

When the Flora Civil War broke out between the High Flora and the Verdant Flora, the Nova kept close tabs on the status of the war. At the final battle in Aboris, Prince Gerand Darmoor of the High Flora awakened as the Transcendent of Life and used his powers to bring an immediate end to the war. Shortly after, Magnus encountered Darmoor and pledged his loyalty to the fallen Transcendent.

On Darmoor's orders, Magnus took the Specter army and swiftly conquered Heliseum by corrupting two of the three Heliseum Guardians and killing the Nova king and queen. Unbeknownst to Magnus, the Nova General was able to save the wounded Nova princess and brought her to Gen of the Shadowdealers for safety.

Simultaneously, the Nova learned that the High Flora had won the war and immediately realized that Darmoor would attack Heliseum. Kaiser quickly rushed to Heliseum, where he found that Magnus had already sacked the capital. Upon being poisoned by Magnus, Kaiser attempted to buy time for the survivors of Heliseum to flee to Pantheon by sacrificing his life to severely wound Magnus and destroy the Specter army.

Thanks to Kaiser's sacrifice, Beldar and the rest of the Heliseum Council were able to lead the survivors to Pantheon. Using the four ancient Nova relics, the Nova priests created a magical Protective Shield that would block out Magnus and his Specter army, which kept them safe from attack for many decades. During this time, Darmoor ordered Magnus to travel to Maple World in order to both heal the injuries that he had sustained from Kaiser, as well as to spy on the Black Mage.

Assault on Pantheon[]

Decades after the fall of Heliseum, Magnus made his move to seize Pantheon. After buying off the loyalty of several Nova priests, Magnus ordered them to seize the four Nova relics in order to bring down the Protective Shield. During this time, a young Nova boy named Kyle awakened as the next Kaiser while attempting to stop the priests. His friend, a Nova girl named Tear, seized one of the relics during the skirmish, which immediately fused onto her arm.

As the next Guardian of the Nova, Kaiser began training to lead the Nova resistance against Magnus and Darmoor. Meanwhile, Tear formed a contract with Eskalade, whose spirit was sealed inside the relic, allowing her to become the superheroine Angelic Buster. As Kaiser and Angelic Buster undertook missions to aid the Nova, they soon learned that Magnus had stolen one of the remaining three relics.

With the Protective Shield down, Magnus deployed the Specter army to seize Pantheon. Kaiser and Angelic Buster led the Nova army to stop the Specters, and after a difficult battle, they managed to recover the stolen relic and bring up the Protective Shield, destroying a majority of the Specter army in the process.

With Magnus' forces severely weakened, the Heliseum Council approved an operation to have Kaiser and Angelic Buster enter through the Interdimensional Portal in the Pantheon Great Temple in order to enlist the aid of Transcendents from the other world in the fight against Darmoor.

Hero of Justice[]

While Kaiser and Angelic Buster explored Maple World, the Nova princess awoke from her coma, which had been the result of the medicine that Gen had used to treat her injuries from the fall of Heliseum. The princess chose to eschew her name and title before reinventing herself as Cadena. During her time with the Shadowdealers in Savage Terminal, Cadena foiled the plot of a high-ranking Shadowdealer named Mr. Hazard, who was attempting to build a superweapon for the High Flora that would result in the destruction of Savage Terminal. After stopping Hazard, Cadena decided to go to Maple World in order to train and grow strong enough to get revenge on Magnus, who had destroyed her life.

The Drakas[]

Meanwhile, the last two known Black Nova, Luska and Kain, were enslaved by a man named Dr. Y. Under his directive, Luska ran a company of assassins called the Drakas and enslaved her brother for Dr. Y to use as a template to replicate the power of Malice. Eventually, Kain's attempts to discover the truth about his past resulted in a Drakas uprising, which nearly wiped out the company and resulted in Luska's death. Kain then chose to go to Maple World in order to grow stronger.

Siege of Heliseum[]

Kaiser and Angelic Buster's adventures soon led them to encounter the Maple Alliance. After realizing that they could help each other defeat their respective fallen Transcendents, Kaiser successfully negotiated an alliance between the Nova and Maple World. With the support of the Alliance, the Nova launched a joint operation to successfully retake Heliseum and force Magnus to retreat.

Helping the Alliance[]

With the Nova having retaken their capital city, they provided aid to the Alliance in the Black Heaven incident, which resulted in the defeat of the Black Wings. Soon after, the Black Mage began executing his final plan to destroy and remake the three worlds. With Grandis under the threat of imminent destruction, the Nova gave their full support to the Alliance in the battle of Tenebris, which resulted in the death of the Black Mage.

Shortly after the death of the Black Mage, Maple World and Grandis merged back into one world, just as they had been during the era of the Ancient Gods, as a result of Maple World losing its Transcendents. With the Black Mage's death, the Maple Alliance began to fragment, as many in Maple World saw no point in fighting when the threat to their world had vanished.

Retaking Grandis[]

With the Alliance dissolving and all nations bordering on economic failure, the Alliance formed the Glory Guard, a small unit of elite soldiers, on missions to defeat the High Flora. To aid the Alliance, the Nova dispatched Edea, the Supreme Commander of the Nova army, as their representative and strategist. With Edea's help, the Glory Guard launched an operation in Cernium, though the mission ended in complete failure for the Alliance.

Society and Culture[]

Until the fall of Heliseum, the Nova were a monarchy ruled by a royal family and supported by the Heliseum Council. The Nova royal family was heavily protected with a number of fortifications. Their castle was magically sealed with life energy and the path to the throne room could only be opened with a combination of three seal relics, each held by one of the three Guardians of Heliseum. Additionally, the royal family had constructed several underground passageways for traveling undercover, with only the Nova royal family crest being able to open the path.

Under the rule of the last royal family, the three Guardians of Heliseum were Edea, Victor, and Treglow. During the sacking of Heliseum, Magnus was able to convince Victor and Treglow into joining him. Decades later, Magnus appointed Velderoth - Kyle and Tear's former friend - as the third Guardian.

With the extinction of the royal family, the Heliseum Council now holds supreme power over the Nova government, led by Beldar. Despite their authority, both the royal family and the council have heeded the counsel of the Nova priests, particularly Fenelle the High Priestess.

Historically, the Nova have had a heavy emphasis on military strength as a result of the constant warfare that plagues Grandis. Because of this, high-ranking military officials have had a significant influence on Nova policies. Kaiser, the Guardian of the Nova, is held in high regard because of his power and lineage. As Supreme Commander and a Heliseum Guardian, Edea represents the Nova people in the Maple Alliance.

Because of the Nova's heavy emphasis on strength and ability, the ability to use magic holds great importance. Tear's lack of mana resulted in her being ostracized in Nova society, with only Kyle, Velderoth, and Fenelle having shown her compassion. Unlike the Flora, the Nova appear to have less fervent pride in their Nova features, with individuals such as the twins, Maroon and Harpoon, even having cut parts of their horns in order to distinguish themselves.

Despite their heavy emphasis on militarism, the Nova have high regard for spirituality and ancient wisdom. Elders and ancestors are venerated for their knowledge, as seen with Edea relying on Eurenth for his wise counsel in the fight to retake Heliseum, or with the Heliseum Council deferring to Fenelle. The Nova place great importance in history, as seen with their preservations of ancient schematics and records on the primordial beings of the universe.
