Aeona is the Transcendent of Light of Grandis. Originally known as Tana, she was the reserve to the former Aeona before succeeding her as the next Transcendent of Light.

Story[]

Aeona and Tana[]

Long ago, Aeona and her sister were brought into existence in the Radiant Temple on Grandis. The Executors, who had been tasked with serving the Transcendent of Light, judged the twins in order to determine which of them was a Transcendent and which was a reserve.

Aeona suddenly began to hear the voice of the Overseers, which she described as "beautiful but cold". In response, the Executors bestowed the title of Aeona to her, indicating that she was the Transcendent of Light, and named her sister Tana, indicating that she was a reserve.

As a reserve, Tana remained in the Radiant Temple while Aeona maintained the balance of Grandis. Over time, Tana began growing curious about her powers of light and her sister's powers of darkness. During her research, she found a book on the Transcendent of Light, which stated that light and darkness were merely analogies for creation and destruction.

Just as Tana began reading why the two powers were split, Aeona destroyed the book, joking that it was so that they would not need to suffer through another boring book. She then told Tana that her life was comparatively better, claiming that despite being placed on a pedestal as a Transcendent, she was merely being used.

Claiming that Tana could simply be herself, she told her sister to enjoy her life for the both of them before leaving. After Aeona left, Tana used her power of creation to restore the book and finished reading, learning that the power is shared between the two chosen vessels.

Becoming Aeona[]

Eventually, Tana was horrified to discover that Aeona had wiped out seven races on Grandis. She confronted Aeona, who claimed that she had no choice in the matter, as she had merely been doing her job. However, Tana concluded that Aeona had gone mad with power and decided to fight her.

The two sisters then fought with their powers of light and darkness, resulting in Aeona being killed by Tana. With Aeona's death, her Transcendent powers flooded into Tana, her reserve, resulting in Tana awakening as the new Transcendent of Light and receiving the title of Aeona.

Suddenly, Tana began to hear the voice of the Overseers compelling her to obey. Realizing that her sister had been telling the truth, Tana felt their chains of law binding her to their will. However, she vowed that she would live for herself, even if it would destroy her. With her immense willpower, Tana fought against the Overseers' mandate and left the Radiant Temple, eventually leaving Grandis itself.

Kritias[]

Through unknown means, Tana was able to cross dimensions and arrive in Maple World. Her travels brought her to the kingdom of Kritias, where she arrived in the city of Trueffet. While walking in the town square, a young orphan named Jean snuck up in order to pickpocket her. Just then, a large anti-magic stone being hoisted by a rope fell down and exploded. Tana pushed Jean out of the way, though she and everyone else in the vicinity were vaporized.

To the shock of everyone in the square, Tana rematerialized out of thin air. She was immediately arrested and thrown into prison, where King Hekaton ordered his researchers to find a way to transfer her immortality into him. Over the next two years, the mages of Kritias experimented on Tana and discovered that whenever she rematerialized, her body regenerated perfectly, but her memories and emotions were wiped away, leaving her a blank slate.

Because of the inhumanity and incomprehensibility of their experiments, the High Priest, who had been summoned from the Temple of Time, resigned, claiming, “This is neither magic nor science. It is beyond human; it is of the gods. We have overstepped our bounds.” In his place, the new High Priest, Arkarium, was ordered to continue conducting the experiments.

Though Arkarium made great strides in the experiment, Tana continued rejecting the transfer of her power to the test subjects, causing their bodies to disintegrate while their souls were left behind. Their souls would desperately attempt to create new bodies for themselves, which resulted in them transforming into monsters.

During this time, Jean discovered where Tana was being held and broke into the dungeons in order to see her. Though Tana had no memories and no emotions because of the experiments, Jean would read stories to her every night in order to keep her company. Over time, the two gradually fell in love, though Tana continued keeping him at a distance for his own safety.

One night, Arkarium watched in secret as the two interacted and realized that Jean was the key to ensuring the success of the transfer ritual. The next night, Jean obtained an anti-magic necklace as a present for Tana, which was part of his plan to break her out. He then enlisted the help of Shey, his old friend who had become a priest in the Temple of Time.

Just as they attempted to free Tana, Arkarium used his powers to control Shey, forcing him to raise the alarm. King Hekaton then ordered his guards to kill Jean in front of Tana. Just as Arkarium had anticipated, the shock of Jean’s death eradicated Tana’s willpower in rejecting the power transfer, allowing Hekaton’s Ascendency ritual to begin successfully.

However, Tana instead crushed the anti-magic stone in the necklace that Jean had given her, causing the unstable magic to disrupt the Ascendency. Though Hekaton successfully gained the immortality that he sought, the disruption to the ritual caused him to be transfigured into a monster. In his final moments, Hekaton experienced a brief glimmer of humanity and ordered the evacuation of his people from the castle into town.

Hekaton then fused with the castle of Trueffet and transformed into a large golem, while the soldiers who were caught in the blast lost their bodies, causing their souls to create grotesques forms to inhabit. The castle of Trueffet then rose up into the sky, where it hung upside down. Meanwhile, the disrupted ritual forced Tana into a state of endless pain as her sanity began to erode, trapped in a cycle of decomposition and rematerialization.

In the future, the Black Mage stole the powers of Rhinne, after which he pulled Kritias from the time of the failed Ascendency into his present, hoping to eventually steal Tana's powers of creation for his plan to create a new world. He then ordered his Commanders to invade Kritias, ensuring that any trace of Tana’s existence would be erased in the siege, and finally sealed Kritias away into a pocket dimension, where time would stand still for its citizens until the time came for the Genesis Ritual.

Crossing the Arcane River[]

Tana, passing through Arcana

For centuries, Tana and the rest of Kritias remained frozen, which halted Tana's painful cycle of decomposition and rematerialization. After the creation of the Arcane River, the Black Mage unfroze time in Kritias and ordered Arkarium to escort Tana to him. During their journey through the Arcane River, Tana's unstable mental state resulted in her powers falling out of her control. As a result, she advertently reshaped many of the Erda monsters, such as Arma in Vanishing Journey and the spirits in Arcana.

Morass[]

In Kritias, the Adversary and the Flying Fish caught up to Tana and Arkarium. Tana soon grew unstable and her immense power reshaped the entire landscape of the Morass, resulting in the Kritias from her memories manifesting into reality. Tana, the Adversary, the Flying Fish, and Arkarium were all swept into a memory loop of Kritias from centuries ago.

Over time, the Adversary, who had taken on the form of Shey, regained control of their mind and worked with the Flying Fish, who had turned into Jean, in order to break Tana's memory loop by changing the events of what had happened. However, they were stopped by Arkarium, who kept the memory loop going in order to learn the truth about what had caused the Ascendency ritual to fail centuries ago.

Arkarium then kidnapped Tana, claiming that she was unworthy of the Black Mage. In reality, however, Arkarium coveted her power to control Erda and attempted to steal it for himself. While the Adversary held Arkarium off, the Flying Fish, who appeared as Jean, helped Tana regain control of her powers, which she used to effortlessly vaporize Arkarium, forcing him to retreat in his snake form.

After escaping the Morass, Tana fled to a distance, where she observed the Adversary and Jean. As only the destruction of the world could end her eternal agony, she briefly considered destroying the Adversary before they could stop the Black Mage's plan. Upon seeing Jean, however, she decided against it and chose to move on.

Esfera[]

Tana soon left the Morass, though she was eventually captured by Will, who had been tasked with preparing a ritual in Esfera that would allow the Black Mage to steal her power of creation. The Adversary and the Alliance's advance party attempted to stop Will, during which time Tana's anti-magic stone necklace fell deep beneath the waters of Esfera.

Soon after, Will successfully recovered Tana and created the White Sun around her, which would then fuse with the Black Mage's Black Moon. The Adversary entered the White Sun and fought Will, eventually defeating him. However, Will revealed that only Tana's death could prevent the Black Mage from obtaining the power of creation. Against all odds, the Adversary refused to take Tana's life, resulting in the Black Mage successfully stealing her powers.

Tenebris[]

During the battle of Tenebris, Tana appeared as a formless light from within the Genesis Crux in order to help the Adversary gain the understanding needed to activate the power of the Seal Stone within them. With Tana's help, the Adversary was able to successfully kill the Black Mage and stop the Genesis Ritual.

Some time after the battle, Gerand Darmoor ordered Melange to recover Aeona and "the seed of the new world", claiming that all would be "there".

Story (Kao's Timeline)[]

In Kao's original timeline, Kao was presented with the same choice to kill Tana or spare her. Due to their increasing self-doubt and fear, Kao instead made the choice to kill Tana. However, their lack of powerful determination prevented them from harnessing the power of the Adversary. As a result, though Tana's physical body was destroyed, she merely rematerialized due to her immortality as a Transcendent.

In the battle of Tenebris, Tana did not emerge from within the Genesis Crux to help Kao, and as a result, the three worlds were destroyed and recreated by the Black Mage. In the new world, the Black Mage looked through Kao's memories in order to see where he had failed. He discovered that he had been unable to account for Tana corrupting the Erda monsters along the Arcane River, resulting in Kao's Arcane Power being drained by Arma. He then sent Kao back in time to stop his past self from being tricked by Arma, thus ensuring that his plan would succeed.

Trivia[]

  • GMS named the Black Mage's two Knights of Creation and Destruction after Aeona and Tana by calling them the Aeonian Rise and Tanadian Ruin
    • However, this naming convention is incorrect, as Aeona and Tana are titles that refer to the Transcendent of Light and their reserve, not the powers of creation and destruction.
    • In other regions, the two knights are called the Aion of Creation and the Demiurge of Destruction.
  • Grandis classes receive exclusive dialogue during the Esfera storyline, which states that there were rumors that Aeona had once fought Gerand Darmoor. However, it is unknown whether this refers to Aeona the 1st or Tana.
