Afrien is the King of Onyx Dragons and the partner of Freud. After forming the first Spirit Pact with Freud, Afrien fought alongside him and the other Heroes in order to seal the Black Mage. Over the centuries, Afrien slumbered on Turtle Island after taking the Black Mage's curse in Freud's place. After his child, Mir, formed a new Spirit Pact with Evan, Freud's successor, Afrien guided the pair until his death at the hands of Damien.

Story[]

The Spirit Pact[]

Afrien was one of the three Great Kings of Leafre alongside Nine Spirit and Horntail, as well as the King of the Onyx Dragons. Amongst the other dragon races, the Onyx Dragons were the most powerful, though their souls remained incomplete until they bonded with another whose soul resonated on the same frequency.

Freud, a magician and a scholar, met Afrien during his research on dragons. Bonding over their love of living creatures and their desire to create peace between species, Freud and Afrien came to realize that they both shared a kindred spirit.

Together, they formed the first Spirit Pact - a contract between their souls that allowed them to gain immense power, such that they could perform great feats of magic that they would not have been able to do alone. After their contract was complete, Afrien gifted Freud a dazzling pendant called the Sylph Pendant. Although it was purely decorative, it was a symbol of their sacred bond.

Fall of the Onyx[]

When the Black Mage heard of the might of the Onyx Dragons, he approached Afrien and offered to form a Spirit Pact with him instead, hoping to take the power of the Onyx Dragons for himself. Sensing the Black Mage's evil soul, Afrien refused and turned him away. In retaliation, the Black Mage wiped out the Onyx Dragons, leaving Afrien and his egg as the sole survivors.

The Final Battle[]

After the fall of the Onyx Dragons, Freud and Afrien began preparing to face the Black Mage in order to stop his destruction of the world. With the Dragon Master's tower lit through the brave sacrifice of Ryude, the six Heroes banded together and resisted the Black Mage and his Commanders. To seal away the Black Mage and undo his destruction of the continent, Freud created the Seal Stones and developed a sealing spell that drew upon the power of time. During the Heroes' quest to stop the Black Mage, the group visited the Lion King's Castle, where Afrien provided one of his scales as a token to keep inside a time capsule that the Heroes made together.

Shortly before the battle, Freud expressed his concern for Afrien, whose entire species had been wiped out. Afrien assured Freud that he was fine, though he requested that Freud take care of his egg if he fell in battle. Though Freud agreed, he also made Afrien promise not to sacrifice himself, and to do everything in his power to survive.

During the final battle at the Temple of Time, Afrien, Freud, and Mercedes pushed through the temple's defenses in order to face the Black Mage. However, the three were unable to withstand the Black Mage's attack, causing Afrien and Mercedes to lose consciousness after sustaining heavy injuries. Nevertheless, the Heroes managed to activate the sealing spell and create the powerful Seal of Time that bound the Black Mage to eternity.

After the Battle[]

Before he was sealed, the Black Mage cast a final curse upon the Heroes, which slowly began freezing them in ice. Knowing that Freud was too weak to survive the curse, Afrien used the power of the Spirit Pact to take the curse in Freud's place. Centuries in the future, Arkarium used the power of the Mystic Gates to open a crack in time, allowing him to travel back to the moment after the Black Mage's seal was created, intending to break the seal while it was unguarded. Soon after, several agents of the Silent Crusade traveled back in time in order to stop him.

Proceeding into the burning forest of Leafre, the Crusader discovered Afrien, along with an unconscious Freud and Mercedes. Afrien explained that he had lost his egg during the fight with the Black Mage, and that he was concerned that it may be in danger from the corrupt monsters of Leafre. The Crusader found the egg deep in the forest and brought it back to Afrien, who thanked them.[2]

He then explained that Mercedes had been gravely injured during her battle, and that she was slowly dying. The Crusader offered some of their vitality, which Afrien used to create a crystal that would restore Mercedes to health. Afrien thanked them for their sacrifice, but explained that he had felt a dark presence for a moment. He told them that the energy was concentrated in the Temple of Time and asked them to ensure that the seal on the Black Mage still held.

After the Crusader left, Mercedes awoke and spoke with Afrien, who warned that the Black Mage's curse would affect her kingdom, as the destiny of the elves was tied to that of their ruler. Soon after Mercedes rushed back to Elluel, Freud awoke and created a powerful Barrier of Time that would make it impossible to travel back in time any further than the moment the Black Mage's seal was made, thus preventing any of the Commanders from stopping the Black Mage from being sealed.

Slumbering on Turtle Island[]

Freud then took Afrien to an isolated island near Rien. Having taken the curse in Freud's place, Afrien slowly began to freeze over the years until the ice around him formed an enormous cave. Over time, animals began to settle on the island and Afrien was forced to remain still so that he wouldn't disturb the ecosystem developing around him.

The island, far out of the way of normal sailors, would only be encountered by voyagers who had been thrown off course from storms, such as John. The few people who would encounter the island named it Turtle Island. When he was unable to move any longer, Afrien entrusted his egg to Freud, who hid it somewhere safe for the next Dragon Master to find.

Meeting Evan and Mir[]

Centuries in the future, a young farmhand named Evan discovered the Onyx Dragon egg hidden beneath his family's farm in Henesys. From the egg hatched a baby dragon named Mir, who explained that their souls had been bonded together by the Spirit Pact. In order to carry out the Dragon Master's destiny, Evan and Mir began traveling Maple World in order to help people. However, the two were tricked into joining the Black Wings, who exploited their naivety in order to use them to gather the Seal Stones.

During this time, Evan and Mir began researching about Onyx Dragons and heard rumors from John that one Onyx Dragon still slumbered on a remote island, despite the Onyx Dragons being extinct. With the help of Olaf, the two set sail to the remote island, where they found Afrien slumbering inside a cave. However, a large ice wall blocked them from approaching him, causing them to turn back.

Soon after, Evan and Mir were tricked by the Black Wings into obtaining a map to Turtle Island. Upon reaching the island, they were surprised to find that it was the same one that they had previously visited. After breaking down the ice wall with a cursed artifact given to them by the Black Wings, Evan and Mir were shocked to realize that the Black Wings intended to kill Afrien.

After they fought off the Black Wings, Afrien awoke and telepathically spoke to Evan, introducing himself as Afrien, the King of Onyx Dragons. Evan asked him why the Onyx Dragons had gone extinct and why Afrien was trapped inside the ice cave. Afrien told Evan the story of how he and Freud had formed the Spirit Pact, and how the Black Mage had destroyed the Onyx Dragons.

To elaborate, he showed Evan a memory of himself speaking with Freud shortly before they had stormed the Temple of Time. Evan witnessed how Afrien had asked Freud to take care of his egg if he were to fall in battle, and how, in turn, Freud had Afrien promise that he would do everything in his power to survive, as well as promising not to sacrifice himself on Freud's behalf.

Evan then realized that Mir was Afrien's child, though Afrien asked Evan not to tell Mir, explaining that he was as good as dead, and that the knowledge would only bring Mir pain. He told Evan that when the Black Mage had cast his curse on the Heroes, he had taken the curse in Freud's place. He explained that the ice around his body had nearly melted, but that his body had become one with the island. Because of this, the animals who lived there would die if he were to move. Freud had cast a spell on the island to prevent anyone affiliated with the Black Mage from entering, and made it so that only a Dragon Master could awaken Afrien.

Evan asked how the Black Wings knew all this, to which Afrien said that it wasn't important. He then added that the important thing was that the Black Wings had used Evan. He explained that since the Black Wings couldn't enter the island themselves, they had manipulated Evan into breaking the spell and awakening him. He then told Evan that his only wish was that Evan and Mir stop the Black Wings.

Heroes of Maple[]

After the battle of Black Heaven, Damien and his demon army attacked Maple World and seized control of Turtle Island as their base. In order to reunite the Heroes and use them to obtain the Transcendence Stone, Damien deliberately chose to attack Afrien and imprison him within his own cave. Through his connection with Afrien, Mir sensed that something was wrong on Turtle Island, because of which, Evan and Mir rushed to the island and found the demon army. Meanwhile, Aran and Shade arrived on the island after hearing that Lilin and the penguins of Rien had been captured.

The four proceeded inside the cave and found Afrien trapped in a net of icicles and corrupted by Damien's mark. Afrien greeted them, and though Aran pointed out that the mark would soon kill him, he assured them that he would end things on his own terms. He then told Evan that he needed to share a memory that he had originally planned to show when Evan was older, though he added that there was no time to delay any further.

Through Afrien, Evan was able to speak with Freud, who explained that he had placed a small piece of his spirit inside Afrien's mark of the Spirit Pact. He told Evan that he had foreseen that the Black Mage's army would soon consume the World Tree, and that he had prepared something to stop them. Evan asked if he was talking about the Seal Stones, to which Freud explained that it was both more important and more dangerous than the Seal Stones, and that only Evan, as his successor, could find it.

Freud then transmitted the location of where they needed to go through their mental link. He also told Evan that he could rely on the support of the other Heroes to aid him in his quest. After their mental link ended, Afrien explained that he had been holding on for so long in order to ensure that the message was sent, as Freud had told him that it was of the utmost importance. Suddenly, his mark of corruption began glowing as Damien appeared. Damien confronted the Heroes and explained that the power of his curse mark was such that he grew stronger as Afrien's corruption grew deeper.

Shade asked Damien how he could commit such atrocities for power, to which Damien told him that it was humans who had taught them that weakness was a sin when they had driven out the demons from their homes. Damien then offered Afrien new vitality in exchange for striking down the Heroes, which Afrien immediately refused. Suddenly, he began roaring in pain as the corruption continued to grow deeper. Furious, Aran charged at Damien, who blocked Maha with his sword.

As Damien prepared to finish them off, Afrien used the last of his power to sacrifice himself in order to teleport the Heroes close to the cave entrance, though the effort ultimately killed him. Fighting through the demon army, the Heroes managed to escape the cave, which was collapsing as a result of Afrien releasing his full power. After reaching safety, Evan swore that he would avenge Afrien and carry out Freud's will by stopping the demon army.

Yum Yum Island[]

After the Heroes defeated Damien and destroyed the Transcendence Stone, Alicia's life force was scattered across the world to restore the vitality that Damien had drained from Maple World. Following her disappearance, the Erdas of Maple World - without Alicia to protect them - were stolen from their natural reincarnation cycle by the Black Mage, who used them to create the Arcane River, a convergence of the three worlds created from pure Erdas.

These Erdas, in their smaller reincarnation pool, began reforming spontaneously without the guidance of Alicia, allowing for the creation of several unique regions in the Arcane River, including Chu Chu Island. Soon after the creation of the Arcane River, Kaling - an Apostle of Darmoor - began conducting Erda experiments on the nearby Yum Yum Island in order to create a new Adversary for Darmoor.

In order to create an Adversary, Kaling began artificially combining the Erdas of the Arcane River in order to create a Vessel compatible with a Godsphere. By fusing together the most powerful creatures of Maple World, Kaling hoped to replicate the powerful constitution of a Vessel. To create a Godsphere for her Vessels, Kaling extracted the scattered power of the World Heart with the power that Darmoor had given her, which she placed within her blue buttons.

Though these button Godspheres were imperfect and corrupted with her contamination, Kaling nevertheless attempted to fuse them with her Vessels in the hope that one of her creations would become the Adversary that Darmoor wanted. Eventually, Kaling used the Erdas of Afrien - a being whom she believed had gotten closer to the Godsphere than anyone else, as Afrien had formed a Spirit Pact with Freud, who had created perfected Godspheres in the form of the Seal Stones.

While Kaling was away, the Adversary began investigating the disturbances in Yum Yum Island and soon encountered an enormous flower. The flower soon bloomed and revealed a giant, dragon-like monster. The Adversary wondered whether it was a Nova or a dragon of Leafre before realizing that it was Afrien.[3][4] As they began to fight, the Adversary quickly found that a portion of Afrien's immense power had carried over into this creation.[5] Nevertheless, they were able to defeat the Afrien fusion, which disappeared and left behind only his button, which was destroyed by Chief Lyon.

After the Adversary continued on their journey, Kaling returned back to Yum Yum Island and saw that the Afrien fusion had both hatched and been defeated while she had been away. Realizing that her last hope for creating a Vessel had been defeated, she decided to wrap up her experiments there and move on to her other plans.

Mirror World[]

During Alpha and Beta's quest to recover the Goddess' relic in Leafre, they were asked by Chief Tatamo to speak with Afrien in order to enlist his aid in defeating Horntail. As Afrien was wise, Tatamo also believed that he would know about the relic that they were seeking. Outside Afrien's cave, they encountered a baby Mir, who let them inside the cave after testing them.

In the cave, they found a slumbering Afrien, whom Mir explained was busy preparing to make a Spirit Pact. As Afrien couldn't be disturbed, the twins asked Mir about the relic, which he explained was in possession of Horntail. Alpha and Beta later worked with Freud in order to obtain the relic from Horntail.

  1. Also provides the voice(s) of Demon (Male), and Aran (Male).
  2. If the player is Evan, Afrien recognizes him as a future Dragon Master. Completing this quest as an Evan grants a secret skill called “Inherited Will”,.
  3. The Heroes have some slightly different dialogue in the way that they realize that the creature is made of Afrien's Erda. It's nothing significant, but the wording is changed enough to make it clear that they personally recognize Afrien. For Evan's dialogue, Mir will address the creature as ‘ancestor', just as he does with Afrien, and asks if it's really him.
  4. Nova classes also get some exclusive dialogue, in which they first mistake the creature for a Nova before realizing that its energy is completely different from normal Nova, as the creature has a dragon face, whereas the Nova have human faces.
  5. Once again, the Heroes have some slightly different dialogue that has them note that despite the fusion's power, it's still nowhere near Afrien's strength.
