Dual Blade is a special branch of the Explorer Thief class. The Dual Blade is created separately, has a separate tutorial, and has a few intermediate job advancements in addition to the usual 5. Their first job+ is Blade Recruit, their second job is Blade Acolyte, their second job+ is Blade Specialist, their third job is Blade Lord, and their fourth job is Blade Master.
Dual Blades are "rogue" thieves who have strayed from their original path. Instead of following the Dark Lord, they obey Lady Syl, who blamed the Dark Lord for her father's death when in reality it was the Balrog who had killed him. As such, she created her own band of thieves, the Dual Blades, to eliminate the Dark Lord. Their base is in the Secret Garden that can be accessed through a portal in Kerning City.
As Special Explorers, Dual Blades have their own storyline and also follow the regular Explorer storyline as well.
A powerful being named Lord Balrog was an evil creature who threatened to destroy Maple World. According to legend, Balrog was sealed away by the heroic warrior Tristan, though Balrog swore to one day return and rule Maple World. Tristan, Mu Young, the 7th Dark Lord Sung, and his apprentice Jin, had discovered that a mysterious threat had been destroying records of key events in Maple World, and so they took it upon themselves to stop it. Under the guise of hunting Balrog, the four tracked down the threat below the Cursed Temple. Knowing that it had the power of possession, they shielded their minds to keep the enemy from possessing them. What they didn’t anticipate was that Sung’s adopted daughter and Jin’s lover, Syl, had secretly followed them. Their target, who was the spirit of Lotus, took over Syl’s body and attacked them. Unwilling to strike her down, both Sung and Tristan allowed themselves to be killed by Syl before Jin wrested her sword out of her hands. After Lotus released her, she was horrified to see the bodies of her father and Tristan, as well as a bloody sword in Jin’s hands. With no memory of her time being possessed, she concluded that Jin had killed Tristan and her father, and so she swore revenge against him. Jin became the 8th Dark Lord and Syl took to the shadows, adopting the title of Lady Syl and founding a rogue group of thieves called the Dual Blades, whose purpose was to overthrow the Dark Lord and seize control of Kerning City.
An Explorer hoping to become a thief was recruited by a man named Ryden, who convinced the Explorer to follow Lady Syl rather then the Dark Lord. After passing initiation, the Explorer became a Dual Blade under Lady Syl’s tutelage. She gave him a top-secret mission to infiltrate the Dark Lord’s ranks in order to spy on him. After gaining the Dark Lord’s trust, the Dual Blade began monitoring his activities and even managed to steal his diary. Upon reading it, he learned that a resident of Kerning City named Jeppi had been banished by the Dark Lord. After finding Jeppi, he learned that former Dark Lord and Jin had been on a quest to hunt down an unseen evil. The Dual Blade went deep beneath the Cursed Temple in Sleepywood, where he gained proof of Jin’s innocence from Mu Young and Tristan’s spirit. After presenting this evidence to Lady Syl, she had a crisis of identity, as she was forced to accept that Jin had not murdered her father as she had believed for so long. Some time later, she
told the Dual Blade that she was planning to unite the Dual Blades with the Thieves. However, she first wanted the Dual Blade to defeat the Dark Lord in order to prove that she wasn’t weak as Jin believed such that he had to hide the truth about her father’s death from her. After the Dual Blade defeated Jin and proved that Lady Syl’s teachings were superior, the Dual Blades officially merged with the Dark Lord’s thieves.
In the Secret Garden, the Dual Blade met with Lady Syl, who addressed the organization. She told them that the Dual Blades had been born out of a simple misunderstanding, but since then, they had resolved the matter and were now on good terms with the Dark Lord. However, she reminded them that they couldn’t forget their roots, adding that the operation was their chance to show all of Maple World why the Dual Blades existed. She commanded them all to achieve victory, claiming that it was high time that they came out of the shadows. Later on, she called the Dual Blade and gave them another mission. In the impending battle, she believed that their enemies were the same ones whom her parents had fought. Though she wanted to slay them herself, she didn’t know if she could endure their mental attacks and asked them to strike her down if she became possessed. Hesitantly, the Dual Blade agreed to her request.
Labyrinth of Suffering
A scene in the final act of Labyrinth of Suffering involves the Adversary (your character) falling into despair in a void of darkness within their mind. The Adversary, whose morale and strength are almost completely diminished, talks to a voice that provides the motivation for them to continue. The voice, whose identity depends on the Adversary's job, manifests as Lady Syl for Dual Blade.
In the final act of Limina, the Adversary (your character) dies after defeating the Black Mage. The Adversary wakes up in the Erda Flow, serving as the afterlife, where the White Mage thanks you for putting an end to the battle. After the conversation, he gives you a unique title based on your class; the title he gives to Dual Blade is "Explorer of Legend".
In the Secret Garden, Lady Syl commended the Dual Blade for his role in defeating the Black Mage and for bringing honor to the Dual Blades. The Dual Blade told her that he had merely fulfilled his duty, but Syl told him that he had done far more than that, having inspired her to move the Dual Blades out of the shadows. She admitted that she had even started visiting the Jazz Bar in Kerning City from time to time, having buried the hatchet with the Dark Lord. She then told the Dual Blade that she looked forward to hearing of his next victory.
The Dark Lord. It's an unfortunate name, for it brings up images of evil and fear. Yet the one who bears that title does so not because he is evil, but because he spends so much time in the dark, battling against the things that would bring Maple World down. It's a high and lonely destiny, one borne well by all those who have carried the title.
The former Dark Lord was a great man who spent his life fighting against the forces of darkness. As all Dark Lords must, he had carefully groomed possible successors. His two greatest students were a young man named Jin and his own daughter, who is known to us now only as "Lady Syl". Both were excellent students, people of great strength and moral character and he cherished and loved both of them. In turn, Lady Syl and Jin revered their teacher and developed a great affection for each other. Times were happy as they all trained and worked together.
The trouble began with an urgent request from Tristan, the Dark Lord's friend. It seemed that Balrog had been resurrected and was destroying Victoria Island. The Dark Lord immediately headed out to help but when he arrived in Sleepywood, his friend Tristan was nowhere to be found. He eventually tracked down Balrog and faced him in mortal combat. Alas, Balrog is a foe not so easily beaten for his evil is not merely physical, but spiritual as well. The Dark Lord lost his focus for a split second and allowed Balrog's evil to slip past his shields – and he lost his soul. The Dark Lord had become one of the very monsters he had spent his life defeating and began attacking Kerning City.
Jin, who had followed his master against his wishes, witnessed everything. In despair and agony, he tried to appeal to the thing that was his former master, trying to get it to remember the man of virtue and honor he once was. Alas, it was no use! Jin knew what he would have to do, what his true master would have wanted and he defeated the monster that wore his master's beloved face. Tears stinging his eyes, Jin carried the body back home to bury him in honor and succeed him as Dark Lord.
As it happened, Balrog claimed two victims that day. Lady Syl, her mind and soul shattered by the loss of her beloved father, blamed Jin for not protecting him. In time she came to believe that Jin had even engineered her father's death in order to take his position as Dark Lord. Nothing Jin could say or do could convince her that she was mistaken, that he would have given anything to save her father's life and that he never wanted to become Dark Lord in this way. It did not work. Lady Syl's heart grew cold and bitter, hating the man she had loved with a cold fury that was like a wall of ice between them.
The last time they saw one another, Jin made one last entreaty to Lady Syl, begging her to remember her father's honor and greatness and the love they had once shared. Lady Syl merely promised him that when the end came, his death would rival her father's in pain and anguish.
Now there is a secret war raging in the heart of Kerning City. Lady Syl and her Dual Blades continue her struggle against the Dark Lord from an unknown location simply known as "The Secret Garden". Her new organization is growing in strength while more and more skillful Rogues are disappearing. The Dark Lord knows that Lady Syl is getting ready to make her move, though he does not yet know what that move will be.
Meanwhile, a man named Ryden in a back alley of Kerning City begins talking to travelers here and there, making an interesting offer.
At the Secret Garden, Lady Syl takes care of her plants, gathers her forces and nurses her ever-growing rage and bitterness towards the Dark Lord.
Yet in the silence of her empty heart, a tiny ember of something she'd long thought extinguished remains. Whether it can burst into flames before she and the Dark Lord destroy one another, no one knows.
The Dual Blade job branch, unlike other Thieves, has their own tutorial, where they start in The Secret Garden. Using a Dagger as primary weapons and a Katara as a secondary weapon, Dual Blades utilize fast attacks, some of which can be chained together.
Dual Blades, unlike other Explorer Thieves, do not gain a job specialty skill in 2nd job, but have other abilities to make up for it. For example, Dual Blades have Shadow Meld, a buff that gives 100% critical when the player dodges attacks, as well as Final Cut, a damage buff that increases final damage temporarily. In 3rd job, they gain a skill called Mirror Image, which mimics the player's attacks, dealing extra damage at a reduced rate. This skill is also required for Mirrored Target, which allows the player to place a dummy to lure enemies away from the player and can activate Shadow Meld whenever it gets hit.
1st Job Advancement
When the player reaches Level 10 as a Beginner, aspiring Thieves who become Dual Blades will meet with Ryden. Complete the tutorial quests, with the last quest being Spy Training, Complete!, to advance to a Rogue.
1st Job Advancement+
At Level 20, the player will receive a lightbulb on the side from Lady Syl, asking the player to come to her private room. She will ask the player to retrieve the Mirror of Insight by heading to the Marble Room and attacking the Glass Marbles inside, dropping the Glass Marble, which the player can pick up and consume. Keep consuming these marbles until the player obtains the Mirror of Insight. Once obtained, head back to Lady Syl to advance from a Rogue to a Blade Recruit.
2nd Job+ Advancement
After saving Maple Island with the help of a Mysterious Voice, the player will reach Level 30 and talk to Athena Pierce, who will send the player back to Lady Syl's Room to talk with the Lady Syl. She will then advance the player from a Blade Recruit to a Blade Acolyte.
2nd Job Advancement+

Afterward, the player will be given words of encouragement from the Mysterious Voice, granting a new kind of power. The player will be prompted to return to the Dark Lord once again, who will teleport the player to the Chief's Residence in El Nath to speak with Arec. He will then advance the player from a Blade Specialist to a Blade Lord.
4th Job Advancement
At Level 100, the player will receive a lightbulb on the side from Athena Pierce, asking the Explorers to check on the various towns in Victoria Island. The player first plans to go to Perion and Ellinia, but Tess offers to travel there in exchange for the player traveling to the Nautilus. The player talks to Kyrin, who mentions meeting Tess and finding him suspiciously more advanced than other Explorers, while also feeling a strange cloudy energy from him that weakened her.
The player confronts Tess, who reveals that he's secretly Kyrin's older brother. He explains that centuries ago, his father Destonen encountered a follower of the Black Mage named Kirston, who placed a curse on his family's bloodline that would only disappear when the Black Mage was killed. After Destonen explained the curse to Athena Pierce and Tess, he died shortly after and the curse passed on to Tess and Kyrin, causing them to both become weak whenever they were in close proximity. Tess, realizing the danger, decided to leave Ellin Forest and not formally introduce himself to Kyrin until Black Mage was defeated.
After talking to Tess, the player will be given more words of encouragement from the Mysterious Voice, granting a new kind of power. The player will be prompted to return to Arec once again, who will teleport the player to the Forest of the Priest in Leafre to speak with Hellin. She will then advance the player from a Blade Lord to a Blade Master.
5th Job Advancement

- Originally, the Japanese version of Dual Blade is linked to Evan, where they have a misunderstanding and become enemies, and the player will fight Evan as a Level 20 boss. This was later changed back to the original storyline.
- The Dual Blade's canon gender is male, although it is possible to create a female Dual Blade.
- There are several plot holes created with the new Dual Blade storyline, which was revamped during the Justice update:
- If hunting Balrog was a pretense for Tristan's mission to find Lotus, there is no explanation about how Balrog gets sealed or how Tristan passes his sword down to Manji.
- The new storyline states that Mu Young is Tristan's apprentice, even though Manji is Tristan's apprentice and Mu Young is Manji's.
- When Mu Young meets the Dual Blade, he claims that he wants to reseal Balrog and follow in his master Tristan's footsteps, although since he was part of the expedition to hunt Lotus, he should have known that sealing Balrog was a cover story.
