Kabukicho[]

A traveler was contacted by Duey, who asked them to sign for a package. The traveler was confused, as they hadn’t been expecting any packages. Duey explained that while it said “handle with care”, there was no name or address written on it. The traveler asked why he was giving it to them, to which he told them that the package had instructions for him to deliver it to an adventurer of their level at Kabukicho Shopping Street of Tokyo in Zipangu. The traveler noted that the instructions seemed unreliable, as they could be referring to any such adventurer in the area. However, Duey told them that he was giving it to them because he had a lot of work to do and because they were the first adventurer that he had found matching the description. The traveler then reluctantly signed and accepted the package.

After Duey left, the traveler wondered who had sent the package. Suddenly, they heard a noise coming from inside the box. Upon listening closer, they realized that it was a smart phone, which was buzzing with a notification. Though the traveler was unsure whether they ought to open the package, the phone’s persistent ringing made them decide to open it. They were surprised to find that the phone was the latest model, causing them to wonder whether Duey had made a mistake, as there was no way that they could have been the only adventurer of their level in the area. They then decided to find the real recipient of the package themselves.

Though they felt bad about violating the owner’s privacy, they checked the latest message sent to the phone. The message said that their mission was very important, and that the sender believed in their abilities, which was why they had been chosen amongst many other candidates. It then instructed them to meet Exio in Kabukicho. The traveler decided to head there in order to question the adventurers there and find the recipient.

Upon arriving in Kabukicho, they noted that it was a flashy town with neon lights and billboards. Though they wanted to sightsee and meet the gyaru and handsome men full of energy, they decided to find the owner first before taking their time to explore. They first decided to find Exio by speaking with the townspeople. At Kabukicho Shopping Street, they first spoke to the Number One Hostess, who immediately noted that they were a stranger and relatively unattractive before greeting them.

The traveler explained that it was their first time in Kabukicho, to which the Number One Hostess offered to have a drink with them. The traveler replied that while they were interested, they had an urgent mission to finish. The Number One Hostess laughed and told them that it had been a long time since she had gotten rejected, which made her more interested in them. Her persistence made the traveler reconsider, though they ultimately decided that their mission took precedence. Though the Number One Hostess continued trying to pick the traveler up, their constant refusal annoyed her, causing her to angrily claim that their appearance, clothes, and mannerisms were nothing like Exio. The traveler was surprised that she knew Exio, though they realized that she might not share more information, as she was already angry with them. They attempted to apologize, though she refused to accept their apology and threatened to slap them.

The traveler decided to take a step back and give her space. As they believed that Exio wasn’t merely an acquaintance to her, they realized that they needed to find a way to calm her down in order to get more information. After being placated, the Number One Hostess noted that their sweet words might even make them better than Exio. The traveler thought to themselves that though they had made her feel better in order to get more information, they were genuinely glad to see her happy. Though they wanted to get to know her better, they told themselves that they had more work to do.

They then asked her more about Exio, explaining that they were looking for them after having received a message. Immediately, they noticed that she appeared even angrier than when they had rejected her. She immediately mistook them for someone else and told them that she didn’t approve of them, adding that she didn’t know what Exio saw in them for them to be nominated. She then called the others around her at the street and told them that the traveler was the one whom Exio had appointed, adding that they should determine whether they were worthy of being nominated by Exio.

The confused traveler began explaining that they had no idea what nomination she was talking about, but the others began advancing on them. They then fought through the Hosts and the Legend of Legends in the Back Alley. They then ran into the Number One Host and entreated him not to fight, claiming that they weren’t the person who he thought they were. Just as they began explaining about the smart phone, he interrupted them and explained that he also wanted to be recognized by Exio. Realizing that he wouldn’t listen either, they decided to defeat the Hostesses and the Night Butterfly on the Roof.

They soon ran back into the Number One Hostess, who noted that after witnessing their strength, she had come to realize that Exio hadn’t been mistaken. The traveler then entreated her to listen, but the Number One Hostess once again refused to listen and warned them that Kabukicho’s Pretty and Muscle Gang, which combined the power and beauty of the town, was coming for them, adding that they weren’t finished yet. The exasperated traveler realized that no one was listening to them and wondered what kind of person Exio was for everyone to be burning with jealousy and losing their minds at the idea of someone else being appointed by Exio.

Noting to themselves that they had only come for the simple task of returning a cell phone, they realized that since the situation had gotten out of control, they would just have to defeat everyone in Kabukicho. As the Hosts and Hostesses had been defeated, the traveler decided to defeat the Okamas of the Pretty and Muscle Gang. After defeating them, they spoke to the Number One Okama, who was surprised at their strength. He spoke aloud to Don Okama that with his Trinity Force, he ought to have been able to defeat them. The traveler told him that while they didn’t know anything about Don or Trinity Force, they claimed to be one of the people that Exio had appointed. The Number One Okama laughed and explained that Trinity referred to a state of awakening of the three powers of muscle, soul, and beauty. The exasperated traveler attempted to explain about the smart phone, but the Number One Okama interrupted and told them that nothing that they said mattered, as Don was the most powerful force in the world that they’d ever meet.

Realizing that no one would listen to them, the traveler wondered whether Don might hear them out. As Don seemed to be the most powerful person in the city, they believed that defeating him would help the others listen to reason. The traveler then found Don at the VIP Club Entrance and defeated him. Don was impressed by their strength, which was enough to overcome his Trinity Force, and accepted their appointment by Exio. However, the traveler begged him to listen and explained that they hadn’t actually been appointed by Exio. Though Don didn’t listen, he gave them permission to meet Exio, which the traveler immediately accepted. Before he allowed them entry, he warned them not to fall in love with Exio, as his charms were too strong.

The Nanowave Generator[]

The traveler entered the VIP Club and met Exio, who greeted them as a hero. As the traveler presented the smart phone to him, Exio told them that they must be surprised and added that it was no wonder that the people of Kabukicho had thought that he had appointed them. However, he explained that it had all been a test that he had been asked to conduct by Nature Y in order to test their aptitude. The confused traveler attempted to continue explaining about the smart phone, but Exio continued that Nature Y had asked for a powerful person, and so he had taken advantage of the jealousy surrounding his family by claiming that he had appointed a special candidate in order to turn the people of the town against them in order to test their strength. He added that he hadn’t been able to sleep because he was so curious to see the face of one who could have defeated the entire town of Kabukicho.

The traveler was frustrated that neither Exio nor anyone in town had listened to them since they had arrived, as well as the fact that Exio didn’t even seem to know anything about the smart phone. Exio then told them that it was time to meet Nature Y by taking the subway to Tocho. He then got up and left, leaving the traveler angry at the fact that they had gotten themselves wrapped up in a pointless situation. Nevertheless, they hoped to fare better at Tocho and hoped to wrap up their mission by giving the smart phone to Nature Y.

After taking the subway, they were impressed to see how grand Tocho was. As the area was large and they had no idea what Nature Y looked like, they wondered whether they ought to ask someone. However, recalling how no one had listened to them in Kabukicho, they decided that talking to others was pointless. As they wondered where the start, they noticed that the pigeons in the area were unusually aggressive, and so they decided to thin down their numbers in order to prevent the monsters from attacking them.

After defeating them, the traveler decided to ask whether the pigeons of Zipangu were normally that aggressive or if something had happened. They proceeded forward and arrived at the entrance of the building, where they found a suspicious-looking woman who continued staring at them. They soon recognized her from Kabukicho and realized that she was spying on them. They decided to confront her and asked why she was following them, to which she immediately pulled out a gun.

Just as she ordered them to follow her quietly, a man rushed to the scene and stopped her. The woman immediately fled the scene, after which the man asked the traveler if they were alright. The traveler told him that they were okay, after which they noted that they had been caught up in so many dangerous moments after arriving in Tokyo. The man then told them that as was expected of a Guardian, they had managed to pull through. Adding that they had likely been looking for him, he introduced himself as Nature Y. The traveler was shocked to learn that the man was Nature Y and wondered to themselves what a Guardian was, speculating that it may have something to do with the mission described in the message on the smart phone.

The traveler then began explaining the situation with the smart phone, but Nature Y stopped them for a moment as he spoke with Agent N, who reported that the situation had escalated to a code red. The shocked traveler realized that they had been entangled in yet another dangerous situation. Nature Y explained that they didn’t have time, as the lives of those whom they were meant to be protecting were being cut down, causing the traveler to grow even more confused about the situation.

Nature Y explained that the citizens of Zipangu were being brainwashed, though its invisibility meant that they wouldn’t believe it when he told them. In order to help them, he revealed that he was planning to install a nanowave generator at Tocho, the center of Tokyo. The nanowaves would help undo the brainwashing, with Tocho acting as a relay station that would spread the waves across all of Zipangu. The traveler immediately realized that the people of Kabukicho had seemed unusually jealous and wondered whether it was because of the brainwashing. Though they realized that Nature Y had mistaken them as the real owner of the smart phone, they also knew that saving the people of Zipangu was something that they had to do.

They then asked Nature Y what their job was, to which he told them that it was the Guardian’s responsibility to install all the nanowave generators across Tocho, though he suggested that they talk to Agent N first. Agent N then arrived on the scene and told them that there was a large number of Male Employees in the building, which could interfere with the mission’s success. He then asked the traveler to defeat the Male Employees, adding that though it may be painful, it was necessary to ensure the mission’s success.

After the traveler successfully defeated the Male Employees, Agent N told them that he would contact them soon. Some time later, Agent N reached out and explained that there had been an increase in the number of communication packets sent out by people within the building who had felt anomalies and had reported them. Though they had a signal disruptor, the number of packets being sent out would soon overload the disruptor, and so he asked them to defeat the Female Employees and collect their Cell Phones. With the traveler’s help, Agent N was able to give the all-clear in installing the nanowave generators.

Nature Y then told the traveler that installing the generators were the most important part of their Guardian duties. He explained that several repeaters would need to be installed in various areas of the building in order to spread the signal and wake everyone up. The traveler successfully installed the repeaters and returned to Nature Y, who thanked them for their help. He noted that Mother Nature had been right in selecting them, adding that “they” would be pleased as well. The traveler then attempted to explain their story, but Agent N interrupted them, explaining that there was no time for idle talk when they needed to activate the nanowave generator.

Though the traveler was upset, they nevertheless followed Nature Y and Agent N to the generator. Upon turning it on, the traveler noted that it seemed to be working and asked Nature Y what sort of change they would be able to observe. Nature Y told them that they would soon find out and asked them to observe. To their surprise, however, the generator appeared to have adverse effects, with the traveler noting that it seemed as though the brainwashing had been deepened. However, Nature Y told them that the generator had worked, and that the people had actually been freed from their brainwashing.

The traveler then took the chance to finally explain that they were a third party who had no relationship to the entire situation. They told him that the smart phone likely belonged to someone he knew, and that it had been delivered to them by mistake, after which they had been searching for Exio upon reading the message on the phone, who had led them to him. However, Nature Y was confused, as he believed that they had been scouted by Mother Nature and had passed the test to become the Guardian for their mission. The exasperated traveler retorted that “Mother Nature” and “Guardian” were terms that they had never heard of. Nature Y then grew suspicious and demanded to know their identity, to which the traveler asked him to explain his mission and organization.

Realizing that they really did know nothing, Nature Y noted that it was natural for them to be confused and began to explain the truth. However, Agent N interrupted him and explained that enemies were approaching. Nature Y then told the traveler that he hoped that the nanowave generator would clear them of brainwashing so that they could understand their mission. Just as the traveler realized that the generator was making the brainwashing worse, they began to feel its effects and passed out.

The Truth About Natology[]

Some time later, they awoke in a room full of bookshelves and wondered to themselves why Nature Y had acted the way he had when they were sure that he had been trying to protect the people of Tokyo. Just then, they found a note which said that they had been brainwashed into coming, though they were now fine. It also described the room that they were in as a safe room and instructed them to go to the Underground Research Lab through the bookshelves. Upon arriving, they were surprised to find the woman, Codename Violet, who had been spying on them. She explained that though she had threatened them, she was not their enemy. She revealed that she worked for the Zipangu government against Nature Y and his secret organization, Natology, which would stop at nothing to protect the nature of Zipangu.

She explained that Natology believed that nature was a being that was more important than humans. Though she conceded that it was important to protect nature, the Natologists believed that the people of Zipangu had been brainwashed by modern society, which was causing them to destroy nature. To that end, they had hoped to use the nanowave generator in order to liberate Zipangu of its supposed brainwashing. The traveler then explained that they had accidentally received a package that was meant to be delivered to a member of Natology, which had gotten them entangled in the conflict.

Violet praised them for their strong sense of justice in helping them, but the traveler retorted that they wouldn’t have helped at all if they had known that Natology had been aiding nature. Violet then acknowledged that the situation was quite morally grey, as both sides could be seen as “good” and “evil” from any angle. As there was no absolute concept of justice, she explained that it was their responsibility to come to an agreement through dialogue, for which it was important to stop Natology, as they had no intention of doing so. She noted that their view of Natology had likely changed upon learning that they wanted to protect nature, adding that even the Zipangu government wanted to have peaceful talks with Natology.

The traveler came to see that Violet was right about stopping Natology, despite their good intentions, as brainwashing the people of Zipangu took away their agency. Violet then explained that as Natology had succeeded in the first stage of their plan, they would likely be coming with their troops on standby. While they waited, Violet told the traveler that she hoped to help the people being brainwashed. The traveler immediately offered to help, as it was because of them that the brainwashing had happened in the first place. Violet asked the traveler to release a Nanowave Suppression EMP to the employees who had been affected by the nanowaves.

After the traveler succeeded, Violet thanked them, though she explained that it was only a temporary measure. She told the traveler that the nanowave generator had a magnetic field around it that blocked attacks. As the nanowaves would resonate with each other and create larger waves, she feared that after a while, they would all fall victim to the brainwashing. The traveler realized that with no other options, they would need to directly negotiate with Natology. Though Violet also wanted to speak with them, she added that they would have no choice but to fight if negotiations fell through.

The traveler then noticed that some of the staff seemed unwell, despite the brainwashing being lifted. Violet explained that prolonged exposure to nanowaves could lead to dehydration, and so the traveler collected water from the Delicious Tokyo Water monsters. The grateful employees thanked the traveler, who apologized for what they had done. However, the employees replied that from what Violet had told them, the traveler had merely made a mistake while trying to defend justice, which they understood. They then asked the traveler to take heart, as they all had hope for Zipangu.

Seeing the employees full of hope made the traveler deeply believe that there could be a Zipangu without suffering and resolved to change Natology’s mind. The traveler then spoke to one of the brainwashed employees, who explained that both he and the other formerly brainwashed employees had holes in their memories, as they were unable to recall details such as such as their addresses or where they graduated from. In order to help them, the traveler collected their resumes from the Failed Resume monsters, thus allowing the employees to recall where they lived so that they could go home.

Stopping Nature Y[]

Violet then told the traveler that Natology mercenaries had arrived on the scene. The traveler asked if she had gotten in contact with them and offered to try to make contact with Nature Y. Suddenly, Nature Y’s voice rang out from the comms as he explained that one of the benefits of the nanowaves was that he could tune into any frequency for wireless communication. Violet was shocked at the security breach, but Nature Y explained that security was meaningless in the face of the nanowaves. He then addressed the traveler as the Guardian and asked what they had to say to him. The traveler told him that the Zipangu government had decided to stop harmful projects that hurt nature, and that they were committed to coexisting with their natural habitat, and so they entreated him to shut down the nanowave generator.

However, Nature Y refused and told the traveler that the Zipangu government wouldn’t even have bothered to listen if they hadn’t shown such force. He explained that Natology had peacefully entreated the Zipangu government to listen for decades before he had joined, with their show of strength immediately garnering results. Though she was hesitant, Violet realized that there was no way to avoid direct conflict. The traveler then asked her to let them take care of it, claiming that as they had helped Natology as their Guardian, it was their responsibility to remedy the situation.

The traveler then headed outside and defeated the Natology Mercenaries. Violet was impressed by their strength and explained that with the majority of Natology’s forces wiped out, they would be able to chase after Nature Y. Just then, Nature Y’s voice rang out from the comms as he addressed the traveler as the Guardian before realizing that he should instead refer to them as a nameless traveler. He added that ever since they had become his enemy, things had become disastrous for him.

The traveler once again asked him to stop the nanowave generator, adding that they had already wiped out his main force. However, Nature Y told them that despite facing setbacks, he hadn’t yet lost, as he merely needed to hold out until the nanowaves became large enough that the entirety of Zipangu would feel its effects. The traveler explained that though they sympathized with Natology, they would stand against him if it threatened the safety of Zipangu, to which Nature Y ordered Agent N to protect the nanowave controller at all costs.

The traveler realized that the controller was the control device for the generator, and that they would need to defeat Agent N in order to obtain it. They rushed outside the building and fought past Natology’s forces before finding and defeating Agent N. The traveler then took the controller, relieved that things were over. To their surprise, however, Nature Y’s voice rang out and noted that they were likely thinking that everything was over. He told them that while he never expected that they could defeat Agent N, it was only because of a structural flaw that caused the magnetic field to resonate whenever the controller was in close proximity to the generator.

While he admitted defeat, he told the traveler that he hoped that their claim about coexisting with nature was true. He explained that they would be watching and asked them to watch over Zipangu as the Guardian as well in order to ensure that the justice of nature and that of Zipangu’s people could exist in harmony. He added that if people were to break that harmony and defile nature once again, Natology would not stop as they had now.

After Nature Y signed off, the traveler noted that they had learned much from him, even though he was wrong. Though justice without pain was true justice, the traveler understood that there would always be a certain amount of pain in the fight for justice. However, they hoped to protect Zipangu so that suffering wouldn’t befall it. They then returned back to the laboratory and met with Violet, who thanked them for stopping Natology into making them into their puppets.

Though the traveler told her that none of it would have happened if they hadn’t interfered in the first place, Violet told them that if the package had gone to the actual Natology agent instead of them, the organization would have succeeded in turning all of Zipangu into their puppets. She explained that she believed that a great being who watched over Zipangu had sent them on their path in order to not only save its people, but to help Natology in their goal to make people coexist with nature.

She then asked if Nature Y had told them anything before retreating, and so the traveler told her about his final request to watch over their two concepts of justice as a Guardian. Violet replied that it was an unavoidable fact that no one would listen to Natology until it was forced to violence. Though she believed that justice shouldn’t come through violence, she added that it was important that the pain which had taught them their lessons should never need to be repeated. Because of that, she resolved that the Zipangu government would take the words of Nature Y to heart.
