Afinas is a research organization centered on studies of the self, which strives to answer the philosophical mysteries of the world.

History[]

Afinas was founded centuries ago by philosophers in order to answer questions such as where people come from, who they are, and where they're going. Though the organization was comprised of Scholars at its core, the majority of Afinas' forces are comprised of Knights. According to Cayne, Afinas has thousands of troops ready for combat at any time, as well as many deployed troops and reserve soldiers, making Afinas prepared to handle any conflict short of full-scale war. As Afinas is focused on studies of humanity, the organization takes great interest in the betterment of mankind and the protection of the less fortunate. Because of its immense number of combat-ready soldiers, Afinas not only has the ability to have its Knights and Scholars expand to remote places of Maple World, allowing them to conduct research and help the people in the area. One instance of this was seen when Afinas sent a dispatch to the Abrup Basin, a remote area near the El Nath mountains, in order to help the villagers of Kaptafel, who were being assailed by hordes of mutant monsters.

During the events of Abrup, Vice Captain Butler, who was leading the Afinas dispatch, attempted to call for reinforcements several times during their mission, although he was met with radio-silence from Afinas headquarters. A traveler who had been sent a letter for help by Sanaan grew close to several Afinas members, including Alika and Cayne. During their adventures, Alika even extended an offer for the traveler to join Afinas after explaining more about their organization. Shortly after the battle at Skuas Fortress, a mysterious man named Dester noted how incredible "the experiment" had gone, lamenting that it had ended so soon. Though he noted that he still had many unanswered questions, he decided that there would be other opportunities, adding that he should congratulate "them" when they returned. Though not much is known about Dester, he wore a headpiece decorated with a large eye, which was the symbol of Afinas, implying that he is a member of the organization. Because of this, it can be inferred that Dester was responsible for transforming Julieta into a monster as a part of his experiment. On her way back from Abrup, Alika had a dream about the Antellion, as well as several other people, such as Oda Nobunaga, Planet Cerberus#Burke, Princess Sakuno, and Naricain. In the same dream, there was also a mysterious robed individual wearing Afinas robes who claimed, "At last, we will be complete."

Soon after the battle of Skuas, the traveler encountered an Afinas Relief Squad, composed of Riman, Enneth, and Garnet, in New Leaf City. When the traveler asked why Afinas had been sent to Masteria, Enneth explained that they had been dispatched in order to preserve the unearthed knowledge hidden in Masteria, as well as to help keep the public order in New Leaf City. Riman also added that Afinas was an organization founded to save mankind through knowledge, and that its relief squads were the essence of Afinas’ goals, sent wherever they were needed. The traveler then entered the Phantom Forest with the relief squad, where they encountered many dangerous monsters, such as the Headless Horseman. In order to combat the oppressive nature of the forest, which caused paranoia and hallucinations, Garnet, a Devata of Afinas, called upon the divine protection of Afinas, which she claimed was a holy power that purified the body and mind. The Afinas relief squad successfully rescued the Masteria research team, which had been trapped inside Crimsonwood Keep by the corrupted Keep soldiers.

Soon after the events of the Phantom Forest, the traveler encountered the Afinas relief squad after helping the Heart Tree Guardian defeat Gollux. The traveler turned to introduce them to the Guardian, but found that she had disappeared, though Garnet stared intently at the spot where she had last been. After the squad left, the Guardian reappeared and worriedly noted that a Devata had been sent by Afinas, though she told herself that it wasn’t a problem, as the corruption in Masteria being all but gone meant that it was time for her to move on.

Some time later, Cayne and a legion of Afinas Knights were dispatched to Crimsonwood Keep in order to make contact with Subani, as the leaders of Afinas had taken an interest in the Antellion. There, Cayne was surprised to see that the traveler was facing Modryn and several other followers of Naricain, who were attempting to revive their master. Cayne rushed into battle and defeated the Phantom of Naricain, which had been summoned by Modryn and Yurian. After escaping with the traveler, Cayne revealed that Afinas headquarters were in disarray, with Alika being utterly exhausted from dealing with the situation. It can potentially be inferred that these complications were the reason why Afinas had not sent any reinforcements to Butler during the events at Abrup. When the traveler asked whether Subani was an important figure to Afinas, Cayne explained that he couldn't go into detail, though he hinted that Grandmaster Delgrund was somehow involved. He then revealed that the traveler had caught the attention of Afinas, and that they were quite high on the organization's watchlist. Cayne then left back for headquarters, promising to contact the traveler shortly.

Organization[]

Afinas is broken down into three main groups: Scholars, Knights, and Devatas.

Scholars are the core members of Afinas, as they have been tasked with the mission of answering the philosophical questions at the heart of the organization. Apprentice Scholars went through rigorous curriculum, learning a myriad of subjects, in order to become official Scholars. According to Alika, Afinas emphasized rote memorization and textbook answers in their education. Alika was considered to be a prodigy, as she was the youngest Apprentice Scholar in the history of Afinas. Despite her talents, however, Alika's status as an Apprentice Scholar meant that she was rarely ever sent on mission, being placed in monster research - a low priority effort - on the few occasions that she was dispatched. Alika's best friend, Vivere, was a fellow Apprentice Scholar, though Alika claimed that Vivere was much smarter than her. Alika was the daughter of a high-ranking Scholar named Rookhowell, who was renowned within Afinas and had great influence, even having helped Cayne become a Knight.

Knights are the main force that compose Afinas. Much like Scholars, Knights also go through a stringent training program. Though their education is mainly focused on martial combat, it appears that they also undergo formal education, such as ancient languages, as seen when the Afinas relief squad demonstrated their fluency in Krakian. Similarly, Afinas soldiers are knights-in-training hoping to become official Knights, just as Apprentice Scholars study to become official Scholars. Knights are often sent on missions to handle threats to remote regions of Maple World, often while escorting Scholars who conduct research in the area.

Devatas are a special group within Afinas, held in the highest regard as saints. Devatas have the ability to channel the divine protection of Afinas, a holy power capable of healing the body and mind. However, this ability drains much energy from Devatas, and thus, it is used judiciously. All dispatches seen thus far have had a Devata as part of their group, likely sent to heal injuries sustained by the Knights or the people whom they have been sent to aid. Though it remains unknown whether this holds true as a general rule, every Devata seen thus far has been noted to be female, with blonde hair, red eyes, and large hats. Given Afinas' implied connection to Subani, a magician of light, it is possible that the Devatas' abilities stem from Subani himself.

Hidden Motives[]

Though Afinas presents itself as a noble organization, there are several hints that suggest that its leadership has more insidious purposes. The biggest hint seen thus far has been Dester, who is implied to have had a hand in the creation of Julieta. During the events of Abrup, it was seen that PULSAR had kidnapped many people, including Blanche and Julieta, with the latter being turned into a monster. Dester notes that he ought to congratulate "them" upon their return, possibly hinting that he had struck a deal with PULSAR to corrupt Julieta for his experiment, as PULSAR has a known history of mutating living beings. Dester has also taken an interest in Princess Sakuno, who has a special type of mana with properties similar to the Antellion. Given Afinas' recent interest in the Antellion, it may be the case that the organization hopes to exploit Sakuno for their own purposes. Furthermore, with the knowledge that the Antellion itself had been manipulating many people by impersonating Subani and Naricain, and given Afinas' connection to Subani, there is a possibility that Afinas' leaders have sworn loyalty to a false Subani, similar to how Dr. Jang and the followers of Naricain may have pledged loyalty to a false Naricain.
