Abraxas, also known as Abraxas the Watchful God, is an Ancient God whose power is imbued into the Ruins of Memory, which record the history of Maple World. Because of this, Abraxas' true form is the ruins themselves, as well as a massive airship that lies within the sanctum.

Before the Heroes of Maple revamp in the Dreamer update, Abraxas was said to be the only Ancient God permitted to remain awake during the age of the Transcendents, tasked with watching over the resting spots of the other gods.

Story (Current)[]

The Ancient War[]

In the beginning, the Primordial God made 365 creations - the sun, the moon, the stones, the trees, the wind, the rivers, the seas, and countless others - each adhering to 365 laws that governed the universe. From these 365 creations that made up the world, powerful beings were brought into existence that embodied these natural laws, including Abraxas. Over time, these beings were revered as gods by mortals, and ages later, they would be known as the Ancient Gods.

Unlike most of the other gods, Abraxas had no physical form, with their power instead being imbued within their sanctum. Within the sanctum, Abraxas recorded the entire history of Maple World within stone tablets infused with magic, as well as murals depicting key events in Maple World's history. Additionally, Abraxas' power also permeated into a massive airship connected to the sanctum.

Eventually, the Primordial God - unable to abide the chaos in the universe - created the Overseers to establish order in the universe. To this end, the Overseers tasked the elders of Grandis with creating beings known as the Adversaries. Imbued with the divine power of relics known as the Godspheres, the Adversaries began a war to defeat the Ancient Gods.

After a fierce struggle, the Adversaries successfully defeated the Ancient Gods. Following the end of the war, the Overseers created the Transcendents in order to suppress the Ancient Gods, who all fell into dormancy - including Abraxas - with the sole exception of Shinsoo. Abraxas' sanctum would eventually fall to ruin - becoming known as the Ruins of Memory - and many of the older records of Maple World's history were erased.

Nevertheless, Abraxas' divine power continued to weakly manifest in the age of the Transcendents, creating new records of events as they transpired, such as the creation of the Transcendents, the fall of the fall of the White Mage, and the sealing of the Black Mage. Though the written language of the ruins fell into obscurity, it remained possible to magically transfer the knowledge of the stone tablets into the reader by honing their mind.

Heroes of Maple[]

In the years following the sealing of the Black Mage, Freud was directed by Alicia to the ruins of Abraxas in order to find a way to protect the failing balance of Maple World. By studying the records left behind in the ruins, Freud was able to learn about the creation of the Abyss Crystal - a substance capable of absorbing the power of higher beings - as well as the fact that the Black Mage had hidden it away in a subspace between Maple World and Friend World.

Realizing that the Black Mage would one day reclaim the Abyss Crystal and take Alicia's powers, thereby destroying the balance of the world completely, Freud began making preparations to stop him. As the subspace barrier prevented him from crossing worlds, Freud decided to make preparations to help the Heroes stop the Black Mage in the distant future. Freud cast an encryption spell upon the ruins in order to hide the history of the Abyss Crystal from all but his successor - the future Dragon Master.

After discovering that Abraxas' true form was a massive airship, Freud hid Abraxas away so that the Heroes could use the Ancient God to travel to Friend World, leaving behind a copy of his consciousness to tell the Heroes everything that they would need. With Abraxas secured, Freud returned to Turtle Island and applied the same recording technique within the ruins of Abraxas, infusing his memories of the ruins into Afrien's mark of the Spirit Pact, entrusting Afrien with passing on those memories to his successor.

Centuries later, Evan and the other Heroes discovered the ruins and broke the encryption spell on its records, allowing them to learn the history of the Abyss Crystal. By using Abraxas' power within the airship, the Heroes were able to locate the Abyss Crystal on Friend World, though Damien and his demon army attacked the airship and caused it to crash in Seoul.

Story (Old, Pre-Dreamer)[]

The Ancient War[]

In the beginning, the Primordial God made 365 creations, with 365 gods - including Abraxas - each following one of 365 laws that governed the universe.

Eventually, the Primordial God - unable to abide the chaos in the universe - created the Overseers to establish order in the universe. To this end, the Overseers created relics called the Godspheres, which fused with certain mortals, who became known as the Adversaries. The Adversaries then began a war to defeat the Ancient Gods.

After a fierce struggle, the Adversaries successfully defeated the Ancient Gods.. After the war, the Overseers created the Transcendents in order to suppress the Ancient Gods, who all fell into dormancy. However, Abraxas remained awake, tasked with watching over the other Ancient Gods and their resting places.

Sanctum of Abraxas[]

Abraxas created a sanctum deep beneath the Nihal Desert, which was enchanted to record events in history as they happened. Over the ages, the walls etched themselves with murals of key events in the history of Maple World, such as the creation of the Transcendents, the fall of the White Mage, the sealing of the Black Mage, and a mural depicting a prophecy: "As the final battle approaches, the unshackled wolf will devour the World Tree."

Kept inside the sanctum was also Abraxas' relic - a massive airship called the Eye of Abraxas, which had the power to locate anything in existence. To guard the sanctum, the King of Azwan tasked an immortal golem named Kapus to serve as the gatekeeper. Kapus continued serving as gatekeeper long after the kingdom of Azwan fell to ruin.

Heroes of Maple[]

In the years following the sealing of the Black Mage, Freud divined a prophecy that foretold the doom of the World Tree. In order to prepare, he sought out the Sanctum of Abraxas in order to use Abraxas' relic, the Eye of Abraxas, to find the Transcendence Stone, which he believed would help the other Heroes in the future.

As Abraxas was the only Ancient God who remained awake in the era of the Transcendents, Freud was able to use its power to locate the Transcendence Stone on Earth. However, he was unable to pierce through the dimensional barrier between the two worlds, and so he enchanted the Eye of Abraxas such that only his successor could use it.

Centuries later, Evan and the other Heroes entered the sanctum and awakened the relic, allowing them to find the Transcendence Stone's location. As the barrier between Maple World and Earth had been broken by that time, they were able to fly the Eye of Abraxas across dimensions, though the airship was attacked by Damien and his demon army, after which Evan crashed it into a river near Seoul in order to prevent it from landing on civilians.

Trivia[]

  • In Gnostic practices, Abraxas is considered the supreme God who rules over the 365 spheres. This is likely the inspiration for the concept of the 365 Ancient Gods, as well as Abraxas' significance in the original storyline as the only god permitted to remain awake in the era of the Transcendents.
